Dado and rabbet joints

A dado is a channel cut across the grain of a board to receive another panel or shelf. A rabbet is a step-shaped recess cut along an edge or end. Both create mechanical support and help parts register accurately during assembly.

You may find dado joints supporting fixed shelves in bookcases, cabinets, and storage pieces. Rabbets are common where cabinet backs, drawer bottoms, or panels fit into a frame. Biscuit and spline joints

Biscuits are thin, oval-shaped compressed wood pieces fitted into matching slots. They are useful for alignment and can add strength to edge joints, particularly during tabletop assembly. Splines work on a similar principle but are usually longer strips of wood set into grooves.

These methods are often used alongside adhesive rather than as the only source of strength. In a solid-wood top, their value is usually in accurate alignment and added glue surface. They are not normally the joinery to look for in high-stress chair frames or major structural connections.

Loose-tenon joints

A loose tenon is a separate piece of wood fitted into mortises in both parts being joined. It performs much like a traditional mortise-and-tenon joint, but it can be more efficient to produce with modern woodworking equipment.

A drawer should move smoothly without feeling flimsy or twisting in its opening.
